Before this reading this module, I honestly have thought that creating a digital product was mostly about coming up with a good idea and figuring out how to sell it. After going through this module carefully, I realized there is a lot more research that should go into it before even creating the product.
One of the biggest things that stood out to me was the idea of the “Digital Product Gold Rush.” The module talks about how large the digital goods market and creator economy have become, along with the fact that digital products can have very high profit margins. I think this makes a lot of sense because digital products can be created once and then sold multiple times without having to worry about regular business things, like inventory or shipping. With so many people creating content and building businesses online, I can definitely see why digital products have become such a popular opportunity.

However, just because something can be sold online does not mean people will actually want to buy it. This is where the research part of the module was most interesting to me. The four most important things we should look at are frequency, intensity, number, and difficulty. Frequency is how often people are searching for something, intensity is how badly they want it, number is how many people want it, and difficulty is how hard it would be to serve those people better.
I really liked these ideas because it makes me think about digital products differently. Instead of just thinking, “I think this is a good idea,” I would need to figure out if other people actually think it is a good idea, too. I could have an idea that I really like, but if there is no demand for it, it probably is not going to be successful.

I also liked the part about researching competitors. The readings say to look at things like the product’s price, positive and negative reviews, target audience, and what makes the product different. I think the negative reviews could be especially useful because they can show what customers feel is missing. If people keep complaining about the same thing, that could be an opportunity to create something that solves that problem.
This is something I could see myself using because I am interested in advertising, social media, and content creation. If I wanted to make a digital product related to social media, for example, I would want to research what people are actually looking for before making it. I could look at existing products, see what people like and dislike about them, and figure out what I could do differently.
The biggest thing I took away from this module is that creating a digital product should not just be based on what I think people want. The module emphasizes choosing opportunities based on data instead of just going with your gut feeling. I think that is something that can apply to advertising and marketing in general too. You need to understand your audience before you can create something that actually connects with them.
Overall, I think the research process is just as important as the actual product idea. A good digital product should solve a problem or fulfill a need for a specific audience. Instead of guessing what people want, doing the research first can make the idea much more likely to succeed.
